Pro Football Focus analyst Mike Renner thinks the Denver Broncos will trade up to third to take Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins.
Haskins is widely tipped to be the first quarterback off the board and out of John Elway’s reach with the Broncos owning the 10th overall pick, but Renner’s post-Super Bowl mock proposes a trade with the New York Jets.
“John Elway can’t look his fanbase in the eyes if he goes into 2019 with Case Keenum as the quarterback,” Renner said.
“He also can’t sit back and see where the chips fall with multiple QB-needy teams in front of him.
“It won’t be cheap, but the Broncos have to make a move.”
The rebuilding Jets are in a perfect position with the third overall pick. They moved up from sixth to third in 2018 to draft quarterback Sam Darnold.
With a new head coach in 2019, and audibly playing the long game, the Jets would welcome a sizable haul of draft picks.
Haskins’ most likely destination appears to be the New York Giants with the sixth overall pick, but the Jets would be happy to see their city rivals miss out on the best quarterback in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Elway could also place a call to friend John Lynch in San Francisco if he feels a move to second overall is needed to land the New Jersey native, but moving to third is more likely.
Either way, the Broncos can expect to part with several picks over the next two or three seasons to have a chance of landing Haskins.
